Day One at Refugio Amazonas: Journey to the Heart of the Amazon

2 minutes read

Exploring the Amazon rainforest is a dream for nature enthusiasts, and our adventure begins with four days at Refugio Amazonas, an eco-lodge nestled near the Tambopata National Reserve. From spotting wildlife along the Tambopata River to discovering unique lodge features, here’s a detailed look at our first day in this lush, biodiverse paradise.

Early Morning Start and Arrival at Refugio Amazonas

Our day started in the early hours, catching a 6 a.m. flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado. After landing, we were pleasantly surprised to find our guide from Rainforest Expeditions waiting for us. A short bus ride brought us to the river, where we boarded a boat for a scenic journey to the lodge. The boat ride offered our first glimpse of Amazon wildlife, including capybaras and white caimans. We even spotted a king vulture, setting the tone for an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Welcome to Refugio Amazonas

Upon arrival, we were greeted with refreshing tea and a brief orientation video on lodge practices and safety. Refugio Amazonas immerses visitors in nature, with open-wall rooms that invite the sounds and scents of the rainforest inside. These unique accommodations allow for an up-close connection with the jungle but come with a few friendly reminders about occasional insect visitors—mosquito nets and whistles are provided just in case!

Afternoon: Room Tour and Exploring the Overlook Trail

Room Highlights
Our room featured comfortable beds draped with mosquito nets, a small sitting area, eco-friendly amenities, and a hammock with a view of the forest. The walls are open to the elements, blending luxury with the natural surroundings of the Amazon. The lodge emphasizes sustainable practices, providing biodegradable products and keeping electricity use to a minimum.

The Overlook Trail
After settling in, we set out on our first adventure—a hike along the Overlook Trail. Guided by our knowledgeable guide, Dennis, we learned about the impressive Brazil nut tree, which supports local communities, and the fascinating walking palm, a tree that “walks” by growing new roots toward sunlight. The rainforest revealed its secrets with every step, setting the stage for the days to come.

Dinner at Refugio Amazonas

Dinner was a delightful experience, with options that cater to dietary preferences, including gluten- and dairy-free meals. The variety was impressive, and the flavors were rich and satisfying, further enhancing our immersion in the Amazon’s offerings.

Evening: Settling In Under the Mosquito Nets

As night fell, the sounds of the jungle intensified, creating an ambient soundtrack. The lodge staff carefully secured our mosquito nets, and we tucked ourselves in, ready for a restful sleep surrounded by nature. Though the temperatures dipped unexpectedly low, the beds and blankets provided comfort and warmth.

What’s Next?

Our Amazon adventure has just begun! Tomorrow, we’ll explore the rainforest further with activities like a canopy tower climb, a canoe ride around Oxbow Lake, and a night walk where we’ll encounter the jungle’s nocturnal creatures up close. Each experience promises to bring us deeper into the magic and mystery of the Amazon.

Stay tuned for more insights into the heart of the Amazon!
