After completing the Inca Trail, we transitioned from the mountains of Cusco to La Paz, Bolivia, via a 15-hour bus ride on the Transzela VIP Inca Suites. This journey was filled with scenic stops, border crossings, and unique experiences, combining practicality with comfort. Here’s a detailed look at our travel from Cusco to La Paz.
Boarding the Transzela VIP Bus in Cusco
Departure Details
We started our journey at the Cusco bus terminal, where we printed our tickets and paid a 1.5-sol terminal tax per person. The Transzela bus platform allowed entry about 30 minutes before our scheduled departure, with luggage organized by destination. Our tickets, purchased in advance, cost 120 soles per person, securing us seats on the first level, which offered a more spacious layout.
Onboard Amenities
The bus seats were surprisingly comfortable, featuring headrests, USB ports, footrests, and ample storage. We noticed two different buses on our route: the first was warm and cozy, while the second was much cooler, offering aisle curtains for added privacy. However, both buses lacked consistent temperature control, something to keep in mind for future travelers.
Rest Stop in Puno and Unexpected Bus Change
Mid-Journey Swap
About eight hours into the journey, we stopped in Puno for a short break to buy water (5 soles each) and stretch our legs. During this stop, we were asked to transfer to a different bus—a common practice in some South American routes. While the new bus offered more privacy with aisle curtains, it was significantly colder than the previous one, highlighting the unpredictable nature of this journey.
Crossing the Bolivia Border
Currency Exchange and Entry Process
Our final rest stop before the border allowed us to exchange currency. The driver recommended exchanging around 10 USD per person, with an exchange rate of 1 USD to 7 bolivianos. At the border, we exited the bus, had our bags scanned, and followed a straightforward customs process, moving from the Peruvian exit to the Bolivian entry line.
Clearing Customs
The customs process involved getting stamped out of Peru, entering Bolivia, and taking a quick photo. Surprisingly, officials did not ask about onward travel or accommodations. After clearing customs, we were back on the bus by 10:30 a.m., continuing our journey toward La Paz.
Arrival in La Paz
Taxi Negotiations and Check-In
We arrived in La Paz at 2:40 p.m., and initially attempted to get an Uber, but without success. Instead, we negotiated with local taxis, eventually finding one to take us to our hotel at a reasonable rate. After days of hiking and bus travel, arriving at our hotel felt like a relief. The hot shower, spacious room, and view of the city from our window were highlights of our arrival.
Rest and Reset for La Paz Exploration
Afternoon Plans
Our first evening in La Paz was dedicated to unwinding. We planned to handle some essential errands, including laundry, getting a SIM card, and grabbing a hearty meal. With the bustling Witches’ Market nearby, we anticipated exploring more of the city the next day.

Our 15-hour bus ride from Cusco to La Paz, while long, offered comfort and scenic views. The Transzela VIP experience added a level of convenience, and the journey across borders was surprisingly smooth. As we prepare to explore La Paz, we’re excited to dive deeper into Bolivia’s vibrant culture and attractions.
