Rome, the Eternal City, offers a seamless blend of ancient history and modern charm. On our first day in this captivating city, we packed in iconic landmarks, local traditions, and an electric bike tour that gave us a unique perspective on its vibrant streets. Here’s a recap of our Roman adventure.
Morning: Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon
Trevi Fountain at Dawn
We arrived at the Trevi Fountain early in the morning, around 7:30 a.m., to beat the crowds. Following tradition, we tossed a coin over our right shoulder into the fountain, ensuring a return to Rome. Fun fact: over €3,000 is collected daily from the fountain and donated to charity.
The Pantheon
Just a short walk from the fountain, we admired the Pantheon from the outside, as it wasn’t open yet. This awe-inspiring building has stood since ancient times, a testament to Rome’s rich history. We grabbed a quick coffee and breakfast nearby, recharging for the rest of the day.
Midday: Navigating the City and Visiting the Colosseum
Getting Around with the Metro
We stored our luggage for €14 near the train station and purchased a 24-hour metro pass for €7. Rome’s metro system made it easy to reach our next stop: the Colosseum.
The Colosseum Experience
We had pre-booked our tickets through the official Co-op Culture website, avoiding steep third-party markups. At just €25 per person, the tickets included access to the arena floor. Walking through the Colosseum, we learned fascinating details, like how 50,000 spectators could enter and exit the amphitheater in just 15 minutes using its efficient design.
Afternoon: Discovering Hidden Rome
Lunch Break and Local Streets
After the Colosseum, we wandered through nearby neighborhoods, soaking in the atmosphere and grabbing a light meal. Rome’s streets are filled with surprises, from hidden fountains to charming cafes.
Evening: Electric Bike Tour Across the City
Exploring on Two Wheels
Our evening ended with a 4-hour electric bike tour by Top Bike Rentals (€75 per person). The tour took us to 12 landmarks, including the Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, offering a fresh perspective on the city.
Learning Local Traditions
At one stop, we discovered the proper way to drink from Rome’s iconic water fountains: blocking the spout so the water arcs upward like a mini fountain. This practical tip added a fun local touch to our adventure.
Final Stop: Dinner and Rest
After returning the bikes, we ended the day with a classic Roman dinner of pizza and pasta. Exhausted but exhilarated, we reflected on a day filled with history, culture, and adventure.
Next Adventure: A Nighttime Colosseum Tour
In our next video, we’ll explore the Pantheon’s interior, wander through the Roman Forum, and take a magical nighttime tour of the Colosseum’s underground. Stay tuned for more Roman discoveries!
