DIY Rome Street Food Tour for Under €20: A Delicious Journey Through the Eternal City

2 minutes read

Rome’s vibrant street food scene offers a wealth of flavors that can be enjoyed on a budget. From classic pizza and gelato to unique local dishes like supplì and trapizzino, this DIY food tour takes you through the Eternal City for under €20. Here’s a recap of our tasty Roman adventure.

Stop 1: Supplì (€2)

We began in the Trastevere district with supplì, a deep-fried rice ball filled with mozzarella, tomato sauce, and perfectly seasoned rice. The texture was crisp on the outside, creamy inside, and packed with flavor. Supplì is the ultimate Roman street snack, and at just €2, it’s an unbeatable start to the tour.

Stop 2: Pizza by the Slice (€3-5)

Next, we visited Alice Pizza, famous for its pizza al taglio (by the slice). From spicy salami to rosemary potato toppings, the pizza was fresh, with a crispy base and fluffy interior. A couple of slices cost around €3-5, making it a satisfying and affordable option.

Stop 3: Trapizzino (€4-5)

At Trapizzino, we tried the signature triangular pizza pockets stuffed with rich fillings. The chicken cacciatore and eggplant parmigiana versions were absolutely packed with flavor. Fresh dough and generous fillings made this a standout dish, and at €4-5, it’s an essential stop.

Stop 4: Salted Cod (€6)

For a unique Roman treat, we sampled salted cod, freshly fried to perfection. The light, crispy batter encased flaky, moist fish, delivering a salty kick that paired beautifully with the batter’s crunch. This was the priciest item at €6 but worth every cent for its freshness and bold flavor.

Stop 5: Gelato (€2.50)

No Roman food tour is complete without gelato! We stopped at Frigidarium, one of Rome’s most popular gelaterias. With flavors like dark chocolate, stracciatella, and a drizzle of rich chocolate sauce, this €2.50 cup was both indulgent and affordable.

Bonus Stop: Pasta to Go (€7.50)

Though slightly beyond the €20 budget, we couldn’t resist trying carbonara from Pasta to Go. Served in a takeaway box, the freshly made noodles were cooked al dente, topped with savory pork cheek, pecorino Romano, and black pepper—a must-try Roman classic.

Final Thoughts

Rome’s street food scene offers something for everyone, combining affordability with bold, unforgettable flavors. Whether you’re savoring gelato or biting into a trapizzino, these local delicacies showcase the best of Roman cuisine without breaking the bank.
