The final day of our Inca Trail adventure began before dawn, with anticipation high as we made our way toward Machu Picchu. The trek, though physically demanding, offered a sense of accomplishment and awe as we finally entered the famed citadel through the Sun Gate, following in the footsteps of the ancient Inca.
Early Start: Lining Up at the Gate
Our wake-up call came at 3:00 a.m., and by 3:30, we were out of camp and lining up at the entrance gate, waiting for it to open at 5:30 a.m. After several days of early starts, this final push was fueled by excitement and adrenaline as we neared the end of our journey.
Fast-Paced Ascent to the Sun Gate
Once through the gate, the pace quickened as everyone was eager to reach the Sun Gate, the historical entry point into Machu Picchu for Inca Trail travelers. The trail led us to a steep set of stairs, humorously dubbed the “Gringo Killers” by our guide, where we even had to use our hands to climb. Finally, at 6:50 a.m., we reached the Sun Gate and got our first look at Machu Picchu. Although fog obscured most of the view, we caught glimpses of the ancient site, feeling the weight of the journey behind us.
Descending into Machu Picchu
After a brief wait, hoping for the clouds to lift, we began our final descent down to the main ruins. The route offered multiple photo opportunities, and as we got closer, we could feel the magnitude of the site, with its sprawling terraces, stone buildings, and lush surroundings.
Arrival and Guided Tour of Machu Picchu
Upon arrival, our guide gathered us for a formal welcome and congratulations, recapping our journey, from Dead Woman’s Pass to the “Gringo Killers.” We learned that the true name of this sacred city has been lost, as it was abandoned by the Inca and only rediscovered centuries later. Machu Picchu itself is believed to be a modern name, adding a layer of mystery to this majestic place.
As we walked through the ruins, the guide shared insights into Inca engineering, spirituality, and daily life, helping us visualize what the city might have looked like in its heyday. Each corner of Machu Picchu revealed a new perspective, reminding us why this site is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Final Steps: Reflecting on the Journey
While exploring the ruins, we faced one last challenge—climbing more stairs! Exhausted but exhilarated, we took in the full scale of the site, reflecting on the four days of trekking that had led us here. The physical and mental challenges were immense, but the experience of standing in Machu Picchu made every step worthwhile.
Closing Thoughts and Next Adventure
Completing the Inca Trail and reaching Machu Picchu was an unforgettable experience, blending physical endurance with cultural immersion. With the journey behind us, we’re looking forward to our next destination—an overnight bus to La Paz, Bolivia, where we’ll unwind and explore a new city.
Stay tuned for the next leg of our adventure as we journey into Bolivia’s capital and share our discoveries in La Paz!
