The third day on the Inca Trail brought us to some of the most visually stunning parts of the trek, with long descents, breathtaking views, and historical sites leading us closer to the famous citadel of Machu Picchu. This day offered a mix of relaxation and awe, as well as some final physical challenges before our last approach to Machu Picchu.
Early Morning: Starting with Coca Tea and a Hearty Breakfast
We woke up to coca tea brought by our guide, helping us wake up and prepare for the day’s journey. Breakfast was a generous spread, including sausage, eggs, banana pancakes, and yucca, providing the energy we needed for the day ahead. With our water bottles filled and bags packed, we set off for the day’s first stretch—a 25-minute uphill climb.
Morning Hike: Group Bonding and Easier Terrain
Today’s trail was more forgiving, allowing our group to stay together, chat, and take in the scenery. As we hiked, we admired stunning views of Salkantay Mountain, known as “The Savage Mountain.” The rocky paths varied in texture, from smooth stones to rugged, uneven ground, and the surrounding Andean mountains created a beautiful, surreal backdrop.
Midday: Descending to the Temple above the Clouds
We reached the ancient Incan site of Phuyupatamarca, also known as “The Temple above the Clouds,” due to its frequent cloud cover. Our guide explained that this site served as a religious location for the Inca, with dwellings likely used by caretakers of the temple. The mystical atmosphere, with clouds swirling around, added to the sense of wonder as we took in this sacred place.
Afternoon Descent: Steep Trails and Stunning Vistas
From Phuyupatamarca, we descended roughly 1,000 meters, navigating steep, stone steps that challenged our knees and endurance. Although downhill, the trek was no less strenuous, and as we dropped below the clouds, the views opened up, revealing more of the lush valley below. Breezes brought relief along the way, making the descent slightly more comfortable.
Final Stop: Intipata and Our Campsite
Our last stop before reaching camp was Intipata, an impressive Inca site with well-preserved terraces overlooking the valley. We caught a glimpse of our campsite in the distance and descended one of the steepest staircases yet. After navigating the tricky steps, we arrived at our camp, grateful for the chance to rest after a long day of trekking.
Once settled, some of us braved an icy cold shower to freshen up, while others opted to relax. In the evening, we gathered at the camp for a 5-minute walk to another nearby Inca site. This site, largely untouched and original, offered a glimpse into the ancient world we’d been journeying through, further heightening our anticipation for Machu Picchu.
Evening Reflections and Early Bedtime
As the sun set around 5:15 p.m., we prepared for an early bedtime to rest up for the final leg of our journey. Our wake-up call would be at 3:00 a.m. to ensure we reached Machu Picchu at dawn. This day allowed us to connect with the trail and each other, reflecting on the beauty and challenges of our trek.
Tomorrow’s Final Stretch: Reaching Machu Picchu
The anticipation for Machu Picchu is at an all-time high as we prepare for the last few hours of hiking. Tomorrow, we’ll finally arrive at the fabled Inca citadel, the culmination of this unforgettable journey through the Andes. Stay tuned for the final day as we make our descent into Machu Picchu!
