Day Two in the Amazon: Wildlife, Towering Views, and a Nighttime Safari

2 minutes read

Our second day in the Amazon rainforest brought us deeper into the heart of this lush ecosystem. From monkey sightings and majestic eagles to an unforgettable canopy tower climb, we experienced the Amazon from every angle. Here’s an inside look at the adventures that filled our action-packed day.

Early Morning at the Mammal Clay Lick

Our day began with a visit to the mammal clay lick, a mineral-rich area where animals gather to lick the clay for nutrients. Although we didn’t spot any animals directly at the lick, we enjoyed a tranquil hike where we observed monkeys in the trees and caught a glimpse of blue and yellow macaws—a memorable start to the morning.

Afternoon: The Monkeys Return and a Canopy Tower Climb

Monkey Sightings by the Lodge
Returning to the lodge, we spotted a troop of black tamarind monkeys and one reddish-brown monkey, hopping playfully between trees near the lodge. Our guide, Dennis, captured these curious creatures’ faces through his binoculars, making for some truly incredible up-close footage.

The Canopy Tower
Next, we tackled the 37-meter canopy tower, climbing high above the forest for sweeping views. Up here, we listened to the diverse sounds of the jungle and spotted a harpy eagle and a roadside hawk perched in the distance. The tower’s slight wobble added an adventurous thrill to this breathtaking experience!

Eagle Watching: A Close-Up Look at a Crested Eagle Chick

After descending from the tower, we visited a crested eagle nest, where a three-month-old chick flapped its wings, preparing for its first flight. A researcher informed us that they’re studying the eagle’s development, as little is known about the age at which these magnificent birds leave the nest.

Late Afternoon: Exploring Lake Sandoval

Our next destination was Lake Sandoval, where we embarked on a canoe tour through calm waters surrounded by dense jungle. Here, we observed an array of unique bird species, including the striking hoatzin birds, and took in the serene beauty of this protected area.

Evening: A Squirrel-Sized Visitor and an Impromptu Night Hike

Back at the lodge, we discovered a surprise guest—a squirrel-sized animal (later identified as a four-eyed possum) scurrying across our ceiling. This amusing encounter reminded us of the lodge’s welcome video, which humorously warned of possible critter visitors.

Our night wrapped up with an impromptu nighttime walk, where we encountered Amazon’s notorious night creatures: a black chicken tarantula, scorpions, and bullet ants known for their painful sting. Tired but thrilled, we called it a night, knowing we’d rise early for another exciting day.

Tomorrow’s Adventure Awaits

The adventures continue on Day 3 with a pre-dawn departure to visit the El Chuncho clay lick, renowned for its vibrant macaws and diverse birdlife. With only one full day left, we’re savoring every moment in this unforgettable rainforest retreat. Stay tuned for more!
